The Shawnee tribe is an Algonquian speaking group indigenous to North America. The Ohio Valley is the area that the Shawnee people were settled before the European colonialists came to disrupt their original location. History professionals have argued that the Ohio Valley is not the only area that the Shawnee inhabited and there are some such as Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Kansas. Due to population pressure, the Shawnee tribe were forced to look for alternative territories to settle in. Competition for natural resources was not the only issue that was facing the Shawnee tribe but there were conflicts as well that led to their search for other new areas. The population of the tribe that was later witnessed after the colonization were not the ones that were previously available because they reduced. The settlers oppressed the natives, and it is because of that that chaos erupted and in the course of the battles that some lives were lost. Ailments like flu, smallpox, and fever also greatly led to the reduction in the population of Shawnee tribe.
There are various sub-nations that make up the Shawnee tribe, and Piqua Shawnee is one of them. The Piqua, Mequachake, Hathawekela, Kispoko, and Chillicothe are the sub-nations that are incorporated in the Shawnee tribe. Piqua is a term that was as a result of a man that was designated to lead a group. The man showed to the grouping in the form of a cloud rising from the coals of the fire. The Shawnee have always maintained a good sense of tribal identity.
There was the distribution of labor between the males and females. Farming of corn was left for the women to carry out. Cooking and taking of the kids was also done by the women. Based on the season of harvest, there was a ceremony to commemorate that. The Shawnee networked with various other tribes due to their migratory nature. When they were in the foreign land, they exchanged goods and services so that they would survive.
After the Indian war, many of the indigenous people were moved in the Oklahoma territory. The way of life of the larger Shawnee tribe is manifested through the Piqua Shawnee who does what, the larger entity does. The Shawnee are scattered in various parts. There are places that the Shawnee tribe enjoys full support because the authorities in those particular countries have recognized them. The Shawnee tribe is ruled by a tribal council that is composed of the principal chief, clan elders, clan women, and men. The tribe is creative, and they make items like pots, wood carvings, and beads. Apart from the wampum beads being used as a means to trade, they were important in their culture and heritage.
